Mercury Yellow Texture

PRICE INFORMATION

There are different costs that make up your monthly piped gas bill. This includes Mercury's retail costs, as well as the cost of gas itself, transmission, distribution, metering services, and carbon charges.

WHY ARE MY PIPED GAS PRICES CHANGING?

Companies along the piped gas supply chain regularly review costs and make changes. We’re increasing our pricing to reflect these changes to our costs.

Due to ongoing supply constraints, wholesale gas prices have continued to increase significantly. As a result, we need to pass through these costs to our customers and adjust our retail pricing.

THE FUTURE OF NATURAL GAS

Natural gas currently plays a role in powering and heating our homes. Aotearoa is on a journey to lower emissions, and electricity is expected to take on more of this role over time. Learn more about how Aotearoa’s energy system is evolving and what it could mean for natural gas:

UNDERSTANDING YOUR BILL CHARGES

In the gas section of your bill, you can view a breakdown of how your different charge types are calculated based on your prices, usage, and days in your billing period.

Variable Usage Charge

Charges for each unit (kWh) of natural gas you consume in your household. This is calculated by multiplying each unit of gas you’ve used (kWh) by your variable price.

Your units used (kWh) is determined by the units on your meter (actual or estimate) multiplied by your conversion factor.

Find out more about the conversion factor.

Daily Fixed Charge

A fixed amount each day, no matter how much gas you use. Your Daily Fixed Charge total is calculated by multiplying your daily charge by the number of days in your billing period.

Dual Fuel Discount

If you have electricity and piped gas with Mercury at the same address (determined by Electricity and Gas registry data provided to Mercury), we’ll give you a daily Dual Fuel Discount. If you are eligible for a Dual Fuel Discount, this will show as a credit in the piped gas charges section on your monthly bill.

When will I see the new prices on my bill?

Depending on when you receive your bill, you may see your new pricing on your first bill after the effective date. As your prices change, you may see two sets of charges; charges at your old price, and charges at your new price. After this, your bill will appear as normal.

FAQs

Why isn't Mercury able to absorb the increase in piped gas prices?

Due to ongoing supply constraints, wholesale gas prices have continued to increase significantly. As a result, we need to pass through these costs to our customers and adjust our retail pricing.

How much is Mercury investing in renewable energy?

We’ve committed $1 billion to new renewables in the last 2 years. We’re currently building new wind farms in Southland and Northland and expanding one of our geothermal power stations near Taupō – adding enough to power up to 142,000 houses. We’re reinvesting nearly half (46%) of our half-year 2025 earnings into new and existing assets to increase the level of renewable energy we can supply to New Zealanders, as well as increasing the security of supply for the country.
