Copper Retirement FAQ
What is the Copper Network?
The Copper Network, more commonly known as ADSL, VDSL or POTS/PSTN, has used copper lines to deliver Aotearoa’s broadband and landline needs for over a century.
The legacy copper network has played a valuable role serving New Zealanders communication needs however with many parts of the network prone to faults, servicing the network is becoming increasingly difficult.
We believe customers deserve modern and reliable services, with Fibre available to over 87% of the country, improvements in speed and performance of satellite and wireless services, it’s time to make the switch.
Why has Mercury decided to stop providing Copper Broadband and Landline services?
As technology evolves, Mercury is committed to serving our customers with the best services available for the long term.
To support this approach, Mercury have made the decision to retire Copper broadband and landline services and will only be offering fibre and 4G wireless to our customers.
What do I need to do if I am going to a different service provider?
Please contact us via chat or email advising if you have changed to another provider, we’ll finalise your copper service on the date you request. To ensure service continuity, it’s important that you only contact us once you are up and running with your new provider.
Mercury does not require a 30-day notice.
Is this the same as Chorus’ Copper Withdrawal?
No. Mercury’s decision is independent and follows a separate timeline.
I have a medical alarm and/or a security alarm that’s connected to my copper landline, what should I do?
Please contact your medical and/or security alarm provider. Ask if there are any extra steps you need to take to ensure you stay connected when you move to another landline and broadband service such as Fibre or 4G Wireless.
We highly recommend you keep a mobile phone fully charged and close by. This is important in case of emergency or any events that cause an electricity or internet outage in your area, so you can contact family, friends, and emergency services.
I am moving to a new property; will this still impact me?
Yes. If Mercury can provide Fibre or 4G Wireless broadband at the new property, we will be able to move and upgrade your services. If Fibre or Wireless broadband is not available at the new address, then you will need to explore alternative providers and solutions for your broadband and/or landline services. Once you are connected at your new address, let us know and we will disconnect the copper services at your previous address.
How do I stay connected during electricity and internet outages if I move to a Fibre or 4G Wireless Landline and Broadband service?
Fibre or 4G Wireless broadband and landlines services will not work in the event of an electricity outage.
Mercury recommends you maintain or have access to a charged mobile phone to make and receive calls. This is to ensure that you have ongoing access to 111 and other emergency services during a service disruption and so you can contact family and friends.
If you are a vulnerable customer or do not have access to a mobile phone, you can read more about the 111 Contact Code application process here
