At Mercury, we offer two types of gas services, depending on what’s available at your property: 

• Piped (natural) gas  
• Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)  

The piped (natural) gas network is available in select regions across the North Island of New Zealand – including Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, and Wellington.  

To check if piped gas is available at your property, visit the Gas Industry website and enter your address or ICP number.  

If you live outside of the piped gas network, we provide fast and convenient bottled LPG deliveries and collections in many areas across New Zealand.

LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. It is generally a mix of propane and butane, sold as bottled gas. Mercury can provide bottled LPG gas deliveries and collections in many areas across New Zealand. 

Piped natural gas (also referred to as reticulated gas) is more convenient because it does not need to be delivered.  It is distributed through pre-installed pipelines, which connect to your property. The piped gas network is available across much of the North Island including Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and Wellington.  

To save money on your gas bill, make sure you’re using any gas consuming appliances in the most efficient ways possible. 

For hot water heating, that could include taking shorter showers and ensuring you have an efficient shower head. Use economy modes on devices like washing machines that may use hot water. 

When heating your home, try to only heat the rooms you’re using and check your thermostat settings. You should aim to keep the temperature between 18-21 degrees Celsius. 

When cooking, consider whether you need to heat a whole gas oven, or whether a smaller electric appliance could do the job. An air-fryer could be a faster and cheaper alternative to get dinner on the table. 

Regular maintenance and servicing will also ensure that any gas appliances are running as efficiently as possible.   

In the longer-term, you may want to consider whether making the switch from gas to electricity is a better alternative. Building or renovating is the perfect time to reassess your options.

Current supply challenges mean we’ve seen big shifts in the wholesale prices of gas in New Zealand. Without an increase in national supply, it does mean we are likely to see gas prices continue to rise over the short to medium term. 

There is no expectation on consumers to ration their gas use. You should continue to use what you need to at home.  

Building, renovating or upgrading appliances is the perfect time to reassess your options and whether switching from gas to electricity better suits your needs for the future.
