Kawerau Geothermal Station

Located in the eastern Bay of Plenty, Kawerau has a long history of geothermal development starting in 1952.

Kawerau geothermal station is a Fujielectric-Sumitomo single shaft, dual flash plant. The two-phase fluid is flashed/separated twice to produce high- and low pressure steam to feed the turbine.

A number of new wells have been drilled since the station opened.

In Kawerau geothermal power production and process heat (steam) provides renewable energy to a large industrial hub. This hub supports primary industry activities, such as tissue manufacturing and milk powder production.

We have a Kawerau Community Fund, which supports groups and projects in the community around the station.

Kawerau shutdown - October 2025
The Kawerau Geothermal Station will be shutdown for turbine cleaning on 10 October.

This maintenance shut is planned to run until Friday, 24 October.

During the station's shutdown and start-up processes, steam will be vented at the station, generating some noise. This will occur mainly between 10-12 October and 22-24 October, 2025.
