A dinosaur-themed Ultimate Free Power Day roars to life
In March, we launched the Ultimate Free Power Day competition, giving one lucky winner the chance to turn their dream day into an unforgettable experience for family and friends. With more than 48,000 entries, choosing a winner was no easy task!
The ideas showed us just how many ways we could power a single day. From backyard water parks, to walk-through home aquariums, high-tech cooking labs, and Snow Planet-inspired backyards - there was no shortage of imagination, and we loved seeing what New Zealand dreamed up.
One idea stood out for an unforgettable Ultimate Free Power Day: a dinosaur-themed backyard movie experience for 7 year old twin sisters Gigi and Lulu. Inspired by their love of dinosaurs, it combined a playful theme with the chance to bring neighbours together, help the girls make new friends, and create lasting family memories.

We powered the dino-themed movie wonderland with a giant outdoor screen, sound system, lighting, entertainment and all the energy needed to keep the neighbourhood celebration going. The backyard was complete with cosy seating, dinosaur decorations and activities, while neighbours settled in for family favourites including Zog, The Gruffalo and The Land Before Time. A popcorn machine, light and sound sensory room, arcade games and chefs whipping up treats in the kitchen added to the dinosaur fun galore.
For the Vijn family, who had recently moved back to New Zealand, the day gave Gigi and Lulu the chance to meet other children in their new neighbourhood. As their father, Jason Vijn, put it: "They've definitely made some new friends today."
From one imaginative entry to a fully powered dinosaur adventure, the Ultimate Free Power Day showed what can happen when a great theme, plenty of energy, and a whole neighbourhood come together.
