UPDATE
30 April 2025 - Mercury has committed to the newly formed Energy Transition Framework, joining 32 organisations working collectively to ensure our energy system remains secure, affordable and supports a high-growth economy as it transforms.
The Framework brings together industry participants across generation, retailers, transmission and distribution companies as well as independent consumer and advisory members.
It is designed to help the sector co-ordinate, share responsibility and act with urgency on the biggest priorities to respond to a rapidly changing energy landscape.
Mercury’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Lucie Drummond, said Mercury supported the Framework because it will open pan-sector discussions, solutions and action to respond to the challenges of the energy transition.
“This represents the sector committing to collective action and transparency as our energy system undergoes significant change.
“Those changes impact the whole energy system, which is why working as a collective is the best opportunity we have to successfully respond.”
The organisations in the Framework have identified their shared objectives and priority focus areas, which include affordability, energy and capacity mix, and electrification.
It is also working to publish and share information about the energy transition so New Zealanders can understand its progress.
“This means we’ll be able to hold ourselves to account, by having the ability to check progress against the last energy transition data.
“We'll be able to identify issues and figure out how we tackle them together.”
Action is already well underway, which includes a comprehensive review of the security of supply situation for this year and future years, which has enabled some to act and prepare.
“You can expect to see a more detailed work programme released in May which will provide more information on the action we’re taking.”
