Ātiamuri is a concrete gravity dam with an earth wing merging into the left bank.

The station was originally designed with three generators. A fourth was later added and commissioned in 1962.
It has both High-level spillway and Low-level sluice gates and 1x 3-phase transformer with the rest single phase.

Work is scheduled for 2031 to upgrade all four generators, turbines and governors.
These upgrades will add an estimated 2-4MW per unit and increase annual generation by 32GWh.
