MEET OUR PEOPLE

ESTHER TOMKINSON

SUSTAINABILITY AND STRATEGY ANALYST Women wearing grey tshirt and leather jacket smiling.
Tell us about your role?

I help to deliver Mercury’s sustainability disclosures, whilst looking at global and national trends in energy. Part of my role is to grow the culture of sustainability within Mercury whilst delivering different initiatives and supporting Mercury’s strategic direction. I get a load of variety with my role, and work with stakeholders across the organisation, as well as externally.

What do you enjoy about your job?

Every day brings a fresh challenge and opportunity to learn. I have had a diverse journey, from the Customer Engagement Centre to Risk Control and Process Improvement roles before landing my current gig as a Sustainability and Strategy Analyst. The opportunity for me to develop my skillset and grow my career within one organisation has been excellent; I get to explore new pathways whilst Mercury also gives me the space to Chair the Young Energy Professionals Network, broadening my exposure to the energy sector.

How would you describe the culture of Mercury?

Cliché, but forward-looking – Mercury is an evolving company in an ever-evolving sector. There’s a dynamic blend of adaptability, growth and support – I constantly have learning opportunities to keep me ahead of the curve. I have had the privilege of moving through various roles, learning and upskilling as I go. Flexibility is prioritised beyond working locations, I do a 9-day fortnight – which is great for my work-life balance!

JORDAN JONES

FIELD MANAGER Pipes at the Mokai Reservoir.
Tell us about your role? My day involves working with the people, the equipment and the process that generates electricity using geothermal energy from the Mokai Reservoir. As the Field Manager, I oversee the operation and maintenance of the Mokai power station. This includes ensuring that the plant runs efficiently, meets production goals, and operates in compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
What do you enjoy about your role? I love that my job is both technical and strategic. I can go from helping my team solve a problem affecting us today to developing long term strategies for 5-10 years’ time. My job also provides me an immense amount of pride. We deliver reliable electricity to New Zealand and it’s people; that electricity cooks meals, warms homes and contributes to the innovation and success of our country. So each day, I get to come to work knowing I am making New Zealand a great place to live.
How does Mercury make it easy for you to do your job? The people. It’s easy doing a job where people support and believe in you, where people collaborate and share openly. I know my colleagues want me to succeed as much as I want to succeed and vice versa.
