Moving checklist

For those of us who haven’t planned our move months out, here’s a list with some of the most important items/actions you don’t want to forget. 
 

Change of address

NZ Post mail redirected.
Doctor.
Dentist.
Banks/credit cards.
Insurance.
Driver Licence/NZ transport.
IRD.
Voter registration.
Investments.
Place of employment.
Kids schools.
Friends & Family.
Newspaper subscriptions.
Magazine subscriptions.
Food/beverage subscriptions.
Associations.

Services to cancel/transfer

Internet.

Pay TV.
Phone.
Electricity.
Gas.
Water.
Lawn services.
House cleaning services.

Organise

Check insurance to make sure you’re covered for the move.
Give landlord sufficient notice.
Keep personal and financial documents all in one box. 
Keep keys, garage openers in one bag for new owners. 
Keep a folder with warranties and manuals for new owners.
Plan meals to use up the food you have left.
Tell your employer and book leave if necessary.
Notify old/new schools and arrange transfers.
Pick up the keys for your new home as soon as possible.

Do last-minute laundry a couple of days before you move.

Packing & Storage

Purge unused items.
Book a truck or movers.
Reserve storage is needed.
Notify friend for help if needed.
Pack infrequently used items ahead of time.
Start a family move kit for the ‘first night’ in new home.

Moving day

Fully charge mobile phone.
Arrange help for kids or pets on the day.
Final clean.
Dispose of rubbish.
Final walk through.
Take note of electricity, water and gas meter readings for new/old.
Switch off the hot water cylinder.
Check smoke alarms

First night in your new house

The first night in a new house can be stressful. You’re tired; boxes are everywhere and somehow there is no toilet paper. Making a ‘first open’ box can help. Here's a list of a few handy things to include. 

For you

Bedding.
Toilet paper.
Toiletries.
Hand soap.
Shower liner.
Towels.
Pajamas.
Work clothes.
Medication.
First aid kit.
Phone charger.

For the Kids

Baby supplies (sippy cup/bottle, formula, baby food, spoon, diapers, wipes, pacifier).
Bedding.
Toothbrush and toothpaste.
Pajamas.
Night light.
Favourite toy.
Change of clothes.
School uniform.
Entertainment (crayons, colouring book, books, movies you can play offline). 

Eat

Cups.
Paper plates.
Silverware.
Paper towels.
Dinner (or takeaways).
Breakfast food.
Snacks.
Coffee machine, coffee filters, mugs.
Corkscrew/bottle opener (Don’t forget to take time out to celebrate).
Pet food

Practical

basic cleaning supplies.
Rubber gloves.
Rubbish bags.
Scissors.
Screwdriver and Philips head.
Hammer.
Flashlight.
Pen and paper.
Sharpie.
Smoke alarms.
