Finding it hard to pay

We understand that financial difficulties can affect any of us at different times, for many different reasons. This could make it hard to pay your power bill.

If you are finding it hard to pay your power bill there are several things you can do:

  • You can ask family and friends for help.
  • You can ask your church or other community group for help.
  • You can call Work and Income on 0800 559 009 to ensure you are receiving all your entitlements.
  • You can call a budgeting advice service. Click below to find the phone number of one close to you.


You can also contact Mercury Energy to discuss other options for payment.

  • Prepay – GLO-BUG is a prepay service that allows you to pay for electricity as you need it. It also lets you pay the money you owe back over time.
  • Instalment Plan – A payment plan that may let you pay your power bill off a little at a time.
  • If you complete our Financial Hardship Form below we will give your circumstances special consideration.

Prepay with GLO-BUG

  • GLO-BUG is a prepay service that allows you to pay for your electricity as you go.
  • If you have current debt this can be transferred to GLO-BUG, and paid back over time at a 30/70 debt repayment. Each time you top up your GLO-BUG power balance you also pay 30% off your current debt. With GLO-BUG there are no fixed charges – just one simple rate per unit (kWh) so you know exactly what the power's costing.
  • All electricity supplied under GLO-BUG is subject to Mercury Energy’s Standard Terms and Conditions for Residential customers.

Instalment Plan

  • We may agree, depending on your circumstances, to allow you to pay by instalments.
  • If we agree, your current debt can be repaid over a 3 or 6 month period.
  • Any new debt must be paid when it is due.
