 General tips
- Take care when working around wiring and near power lines.
- Treat all wiring and sockets as live at all times.
- If you're operating any electrical equipment outdoors, always use an earth leakage circuit breaker or an isolating transformer.
Cords
- If you're using an extension cord, check the cord first to make sure it's not frayed or cracked.
- Ensure cords are fully unrolled. A rolled up extension cord could heat up when the power is on, causing the insulation to melt and possibly catch fire.
- Keep cords out of areas where you're walking. Never nail or staple them.
- Don't place cords under carpets or rugs, or rest furniture on top.
Overhead power lines
- If you want to paint or water blast near the power line attached to your home, contact your lines company to discuss temporary power disconnection.
- Always look up before extending ladders outside.
- If you get something tangled in a power line, call your lines company to have them remove it. Never try to remove it yourself.
Underground power cables
- If you're digging in the street or near buildings, always assume power cables will be present.
- Use up-to-date service plans and cable avoidance tools.
