Renovations and alterations

General tips

  • Take care when working around wiring and near power lines.
  • Treat all wiring and sockets as live at all times.
  • If you're operating any electrical equipment outdoors, always use an earth leakage circuit breaker or an isolating transformer.

Cords

  • If you're using an extension cord, check the cord first to make sure it's not frayed or cracked.
  • Ensure cords are fully unrolled. A rolled up extension cord could heat up when the power is on, causing the insulation to melt and possibly catch fire.
  • Keep cords out of areas where you're walking. Never nail or staple them.
  • Don't place cords under carpets or rugs, or rest furniture on top.

Overhead power lines

  • If you want to paint or water blast near the power line attached to your home, contact your lines company to discuss temporary power disconnection.
  • Always look up before extending ladders outside.
  • If you get something tangled in a power line, call your lines company to have them remove it. Never try to remove it yourself.
Underground power cables
  • If you're digging in the street or near buildings, always assume power cables will be present.
  • Use up-to-date service plans and cable avoidance tools.
