What to do in an emergency

Here are some simple safety instructions to follow in case of emergency.

Gas

If you smell gas:

  • Turn gas appliances off, if you still smell gas turn the gas off at the meter.
  • Ventilate the area by opening doors and windows.
  • Leave electrical appliances as they are, don’t turn them off
    or on.
  • Vacate the premises.
  • Call 0800 2 FAULTS (0800 232 858).This is the Mercury Energy Gas Faults line.

Electricity

If an appliance overheats or catches fire:

  • Turn off the appliance at the wall.
  • Never throw water over it. Smother a pan fire, for example, by covering it with a lid.

First aid

  • If someone suffers an electric shock, don't touch them while they're still in contact with the source of electricity.
  • Turn off the power or disconnect the appliance.
  • If the power can't be turned off, use non-conductive material, such as a piece of wood, to separate the victim from the power source.
  • Dial 111 immediately.
  • If breathing has stopped, apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
  • If someone is burned, apply cold water to the burns. If the burns are severe, call for medical help.

Natural disasters

Before a severe flood, or after a damaging earthquake, turn off electricity and gas supplies at the mains.
