We are 100% owned by the people of New Zealand. Mercury Energy is the retail operating division of Mighty River Power, which is a State Owned Enterprise. The company was established in 1994 in accordance with the Electricity Industry Reforms Act, which required power companies to separate their lines and energy retail businesses. Mercury Energy was acquired by Mighty River Power in 1999, and dates back to 1921 when it was established to supply electricity to the rapidly expanding Auckland region.
